O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

I love Christmas time!

Here's some photos that begin the season...

Can you find Hannah and Daddy?

Daddy showing Hannah how to hook the ornaments.

Hanging her first ornament.

(You can't tell here, but Hannah put her boots on the wrong feet.  This kid and her obsession with footwear cracks us up.  She also has St. Patrick's Day socks on under those boots!)

Time to light the tree!

Removing the ornaments...this shall be interesting...btw plastic ornaments = awesome and fun kid proof.

Melissa and Doug

Last Christmas my parents bought Hannah a picnic basket set by Melissa and Doug. Since they have become one of our favorite toy makers. Hannah loves trains. Guess what? Melissa and Doug are having a train table and train set give away and we are hoping to win!!! I've had my eye on their trains for some time, too. If you haven't checked out Melissa and Doug before I highly recommend you do. Hannah could make a whole Christmas List just of their toys!

The Leaves are Changing and Fall is Here

The fall leaves are finally here and are absolutely gorgeous.  All that gorgeous comes with a price, raking!  Sergio raked the front yard Friday night, and a couple days later it was already covered. A week later, Hannah could swim in the leaves if she wanted.  To work we went this morning.

You'd never guess that little worker has a cold.  She's such a busy one.  The warm sunshine and fresh air felt so nice.  She's all tuckered out, napping on the couch now.

Fun on the Boardwalk

Grandma Celina is here visiting this week.  Today we gave her a driving tour of the area.  Then we spent some time in Oceanfront along the boardwalk.

Naval Aviation Monument Park

"We'll be having some fun [on] the boardwalk..."

(That's a pup playing in the ocean.)

They are setting up Christmas light displays on the beach.
And Santa's little helper was there to supervise the project.
(Does anyone else notice the cute, little elf ears?)

Editing is Fun

We did another photo shoot on Thursday.  I did some editing on Thursday and Friday.  Then Hannah pressed the power button on our power strip which corrupted all our work.  Luckily we had backup of our previous work, and the shoot we did was still on the memory cards.  But I still had to redo all the work from Thursday and Friday.  Turns out I'm happy I did.  I think the photos look a lot better this time around.  Sergio is the editing master.  He's been very helpful in teaching me.  And I'm finding it to be a lot of fun once I've figured out the tricks.  I even found some tools in the program he didn't know about ;)  I'm very excited to share some of my favorites when I'm done.  Till then you'll have to wait. :)

Daddy's Girl

I snapped a couple pictures today, and I wanted to share my favorite!

We just can't believe she is 18 months now.   It feels like we just had her 1st birthday, and now we are half way to her 2nd.  I'm holding onto this age for dear life, but I know it is slipping away fast.  We love you precious girl!!!

Goodbye Wallpaper, Hello Paint

Before:
As my brother said, "1992 called, they want their wallpaper back. Today is all about the cool colors of painted walls".
My response, "They can't have it. I'm afraid it belongs to 1982."

After:

I wanted a splash of color, but since it is not our home I didn't want to add anything too dramatic that the owners would not like.  But then again they did have wallpaper before.
(I plan on putting flowers in the tumbler)

The bathroom decor came from our master.  The red matches our living room, and I've switched over to blues and browns in the master.  Although I like the browns better in this bathroom, for now I'm just using what I have, since we don't plan on staying here.

These candles, atop the toilet, originally had  Japanese charms hanging from the leather ties.  So I replaced them with metal scrapbook brads I had.

Some tips I learned from HGTV.  When stripping wallpaper mix hot water and fabric softener, instead of wall paper remover.  Works awesome and smells really good.  I used the High Def Valspar paint.  Although it's a little more expensive, it was awesome.  You don't have to prime and only 1 coat needed.  I figured by the time I bought primer and paint, the cost evens out.

Hawkeye-Greyhound Ball

Last night we had a night out on the town going to the Hawkeye-Greyhound Ball.

We had our baby sitter snap a picture of us before rushing out the door.  We don't have any other photos since our little point in shoot camera is out of commission and didn't exactly want to lug around the DSLR.  But luckily our friends had their cameras ready.  I'll share those when I get copies.

Home Notes

We've been here for 6 months now, and I'm getting the urge to rearrange.  I don't know why this happens to me, but I've been doing it since I was little.  I used to rearrange my room a couple times a year.  I'd close my bedroom door, and not let anyone in till it was just perfect.  Then I'd call my mom in to show her. The problem is now I have a whole house that is getting to me.

One nice thing about moving around in the military is you get to live in lots of houses and figure out what you like and don't like.  Great for buying a house someday.  Over the years I've been making a mental note of things.  But I'm afraid I won't be able to recall it all someday.  So why not write it down.

First our annex is a complete waist of space.  It's set off from the rest of the house and is currently the "man cave".  Which I loved when we moved in because it hid Sergio's guitars, xbox, our futon, and ottoman coffee table (the 2 worst furniture purchases ever).  As much as Sergio enjoys his guitars and xbox neither of us like how isolated it is.

Next I want a real dining room.  I've dreamt of a dining room forever.  We have one, but we're using it as a playroom.  I'd love to host dinner here, but we only have a small table in the kitchen.  I gave up the dining room, because while we were setting up the house, I felt like on a practical note, it would just become a formal room that was never used.  Especially since it's set off by itself.  And now I'm realizing it could be the heart of entertaining.

Solutions. We've considered moving our guest room (currently in the 3rd bedroom) to the annex, moving our office to the 3rd bedroom.  And moving Hannah's stuff to her room, since she enjoys playing in her room.  Where ever Hannah's toys our, our office needs to be, because it allows us to work while she plays.  That would then give us a dining space and an empty room, not sure for what.  But I love the flow of our downstairs.  I love that I can see the family room and Hannah's playroom from my desk.  Or if I'm in the kitchen I can hear Hannah in her playroom and peep in on her.

I've come to realize when we buy a house some day, I don't want a 2 story.  It really divides the house, not to mention lugging laundry up and down.  And don't forget utility costs with having two separate heating and cooling controls.  Also heat rises, which means in the summer the upstairs is an oven, and not even the AC helps.  The exception would be if I could have enough space on the bottom floor for a study, dining room, kitchen, family room, and kids space.  Also a kids space would not be necessary on a single story, because Hannah and I could easily go in her room and bring some toys out in the main living space for her.  However that could change with age. Right now, I'm not comfortable with her going up and down the stairs.

I'm also learning that more square footage means nothing without a very good layout and storage space.  Our home is 1900 sqft but feels more cramped than smaller homes we've lived in.  I have a feeling the rooms won't be changing, but the annex may just become a storage room.  It would be nice to move our storage bins and luggage from the garage to the annex away from the creepy spiders.  We loved the closet spaces we had in our Meridian home.  We had a utility closet in the middle of the house, along with a large entryway closet, 2 closets in our guest room/ office, and 3 in our master.  The entryway closet was awesome for coats and shoes.  Two closets in the office was wonderful because I could put away all my office supplies in one, and Sergio's guitars and amp in the other.  Ideally I'd like a walk in closet in the master, but it needs to be bigger than our current.  I don't hang a lot of clothes, but Sergio's uniforms need a closet all to themselves.  And he hangs a lot of his clothes.  Right now his uniforms our in our guest room, which is not ideal when we have guests and another baby someday.  By the way, this is a common mistake I've noticed people make on those house hunting shows.  When the master closets are small, they say it's okay because there's a spare closet in the 2nd bedroom.  But they fail to look towards the future when kids comes along.  I know a lot of people plan on getting a bigger home when they begin their family.  However, looking at our current housing market, people should probably consider how a home will fit them in the long haul, and not as a starter home.  Back to our closet needs.  Our outerwear, shoes, and office supplies all share a tiny closet down stairs.  Would love to have my office stuff in the office.  That however may be something that could be mended with a change in office furniture and storage.

One key component of layout I'd like is a home that feels open, but the spaces still defined.  Older homes like ours have the rooms each separated so it doesn't feel as bright and open.  But I do like that the family room is the family room, and the office is the office.  So just need to find a balance there.

And you can never forget the exterior.  Which I only really have to requests.  First,  LOW maintenance.  So there definitely won't be any pine trees.  Second enough space in the front for some seating.  Doesn't have to be a large porch,  but enough for a couple chairs to relax in while watching Hannah play.

Quite the laundry list.

Little Lady Bug

Before we left to begin our Halloween festivities I tried to get a couple photos of my little lady bug.

However she was busy frolicking about.

Last year she was a ballerina, but only passed out candy.

So this year was her first time trick-or-treating.  We trick-or-treated on base at our friends' home.

She enjoyed walking along.  When we approached homes with people present she quickly became shy and I had to carry her up to the porch.  Many people left candy in a bowl while they were out trick-or-treating.  In those cases she made no hesitation about what to do.  She went straight to the bowl and picked out a piece of candy, then placed it in her bucket.  And I enjoyed every moment of watching her excitement.

She trick-or-treated for a whole hour, then decided she'd had enough.

Daddy sent his love...
We sure missed you tonight!!!
